Is the latest Apple 3G i-phone about to be unlocked?

It would appear so, images of the “about screen”are circulating on blog sites showing that the modem firmware has been downgraded to the older beta firmware. The unlockers are not yet claiming that they have successfully unlocked the Apple 3G iphone but they show this image to prove that they have hacked into the 3G baseband which will, without dismantling the phone, allow them to circumvent security checks and sudsequently they should have an easier task to unlock the phone.

If they are successful in unlocking the phone, will they then be able to upgrade the Apple i-phone back to its original specification?    opinions and comments would be appreciated
