O2 now has a dedicated website aimed at educating and warning parents of the dangers faced by children using mobile technology. By informing parents, O2 believes they will be better placed to minimise the risks to their children. The O2 dedicated child protection website website can be seen at www.o2.co.uk/protectourchildren.
O2, through its parent company Telefónica, has signed up to the EU-wide common framework to promote safer mobile phone use by teenagers and children. O2 has strengthened its partnership with Childnet International.
Last year, Childnet helped train more than 100 O2 employees to become internal experts that are helping to make sure that parents receive practical and consistent advice from O2 regarding children’s use of mobiles. In 2007, O2 will be working with Childnet to introduce a series of measures to help ensure that expert advice is readily available for parents who choose to buy their children a mobile phone.
O2′s concern goes beyond adult content to all risks faced by young people using mobile devices. O2 has invested in technological means to protect children, including bars, content rating and moderation of the different mobile channels. Children’s web access can be restricted to a limited number of suitable sites.
